In a recent post where I expressed opposition to the 35-0 Senate vote approving a new law lowering the age of consent for girls from 18 to 16, and making it OK for boys 19 to have sexual relations with 16 year old girls -- and 20 year old young men to have relations with 17 year old girls -- I asked the question, "what happens to the 16, 17 or 18 year old girls that get pregnant?" I talked about the fact that girls of that age are not prepared to have babies or support them or themselves, and the cost on society that such pregnancies can bring to bear on society in the form of health care, food, housing and child care. I failed to mention that these kids probably won't finish school, so the poor girls will end up with no skills for their future. Some may get married, but most will not. What I did not mention in my previous post is the possibility of a greater call for on-demand abortions by girls of these age groups. I foresee much greater participation in sexual activiity among kids with the government's "stamp of approval" should this bill pass the House -- thus an increase in pregnancies. The bill includes within it wording that allows girls under the age of consent to seek approval from the Court for an abortion. Is this really the direction we as Idahoans want to go? I don't think so. Abortion should not be just another form of "birth control." This bill MUST die in the House -- for the future of Idaho.
